
Social Interaction & Intimacy
Social interaction & the development of intimacy are not based on the intention to communicate. They require the recognition & interpretation of social signals, the maintenance of attention, the adaptation of response & the regulation of emotional intensity.
When difficulty is observed in one or more of these functions, contact with others may require greater effort or become emotionally stressful, without this necessarily indicating a lack of interest in communication or connection.

The presence of isolated difficulties does not necessarily indicate the onset of a disorder. The duration, intensity, the conditions in which they occur & their impact on daily functioning are taken into account. When the difficulties are severe or persistent, an evaluation by an appropriate health professional is required.
