Addictions & Addictive Behaviors

Addictions are not simply a habit, nor are they due to a lack of willpower. They are characterized by difficulty controlling the use of a substance or a repetitive behavior, which continues despite its negative consequences. They can involve alcohol or other substances, as well as behaviors such as gambling or gaming, when they cause significant distress or burden on personal, social, or occupational functioning.

Dependence or addictive behavior can manifest as:

  • Strong desire or urge to use the substance or repeat the behavior

  • Difficulty limiting the frequency or intensity of

  • Gradual prioritization of it over other activities or obligations

  • Continuing despite negative consequences

  • Repeated unsuccessful attempts to cut down or stop

  • Impairment of personal, social or occupational functioning

Anxiety, depressive symptoms, traumatic experiences, or sleep difficulties may coexist and affect the overall picture and the therapeutic process. However, their presence alone does not constitute the cause of addiction or a potential relapse.

The contribution of qEEG Brain Mapping & EEG Neurofeedback

qEEG Brain Mapping is not a stand-alone diagnostic tool for addictions & does not determine the cause of use or behavior. It records & analyzes the electrical activity of the brain, providing data on its function, which is taken into account with the history & overall picture of each individual.

During EEG Neurofeedback, the brain receives real-time visual & auditory feedback, which changes according to its electrical activity. Based on qEEG Brain Mapping data, training can focus on regulating alertness, maintaining attention, managing emotional intensity & controlling impulses.

The program is individually designed, based on the functional profile of each brain, as reflected in the qEEG Brain Mapping data. In cases of addiction, EEG Neurofeedback can be integrated as a supplement into a specialized therapeutic framework & does not replace psychiatric, psychological or medical monitoring.

With the aim of:

  • Enhancement of the ability to regulate alertness & emotional intensity

  • Better management of impulses & cravings

  • Improving the ability to maintain attention

  • Support for daily functioning within the context of the therapeutic process
